Competitive Program
FLL Challenge
In Halton STEM Club’s FIRST® LEGO® League Challenge (FLL) (https://firstroboticscanada.org/fll/) Competitive program, students compete at official FLL Challenge tournaments. Under the guidance of experienced mentors, students use Python (https://www.python.org/) as the robot platform, to design, build, and code LEGO-based robots to complete various challenging missions on a themed playing mat.
FLL is much more than robotics! In addition to coding, students will also learn how to work as a team, how to research, and how to develop impactful solutions to real world problems which will become the foundation for their innovation project.
Teams will compete at a Qualifying tournament, where they will demonstrate their robot design, building, and coding skills. In addition to this, they will present the research from their innovation project to a panel of judges. Should teams qualify, they will be invited to compete again at the Provincial Qualifying event. Exceptional teams progress to the FLL World Games and other Invitational tournaments.
At the end of the season, students participate in an in-house Scrimmage. This tournament allows Competitive teams within Halton STEM Club to further practice the skills that they developed since the competitive events. Teams will present their improved robot strategies and innovation projects to a panel of mock judges.
Students are requested to bring their own device. We will use them as needed in the class.
Additional Information:
Students may be given homework assignments to help further their understanding on an engineering concept or to aid in the completion of their innovation project. Homework assignments can take upwards of an hour depending on how much of the task was completed in-person. Students may need to plan further additional time for homework in preparation for Qualifying, Provincial*, and International Competitions* competitions.
Additional Cost Information:
* Should students advance beyond the Qualifying tournament, an additional fee will be required for students to participate in provincial and/or International tournaments. The fee is to cover additional classes and materials, youth mentor travel, and event registration for Provincial or International tournaments.
